Second Encounter was only available as mail-order from MacPlay, for $14.95 plus $2 for shipping and handling. See the Original Encounter article for more details on the levels and story. The 3DO and Apple IIGS ports of the game contains the levels from both the Second and Third Encounters, using the name " Original Encounter" to refer to the Second Encounter levels.

The SNES and Jaguar ports add a more detailed story to connect the levels, which is mostly not present in Second Encounter. Second Encounter was used as the base for the Jaguar port of the game, which also contain the same levels. This game is based on the SNES port of the game, containing the same levels (the Japanese version of this SNES port is called Wolfenstein 3D: The Claw of Eisenfaust). It is part of the Mac Family line of Wolfenstein 3D ports. It contains an assortment of modified levels from the original 60 MS-DOS Wolfenstein 3D levels. It can be challenging even on novice difficulty setting but you may enjoy it as long as you don't consider it Wolfenstein 3-D.Wolfenstein 3D: Second Encounter is a 30 level campaign Macintosh version of Wolfenstein 3D, published in 1994 and distributed by MacPlay. It skips about 1/2 of the levels and even goes as far as changing the story (instead of escaping fro m Castle Wolfenstein, you are invading it) and plot. In conclusion, it's just "okay" Don't expect Wolfenstein 3-D because you won't find it. Surprisingly enough, they even changed the AI language from German to English. They have removed anything indicating Nazis or anything suggesting Nazis. When you play it you'll probably notice more differences than similarities if you have played the original Wolfenstein 3-D. Nintendo has changed so much about the game, it butchers ID software's work. It wouldn't be a bad game if it wasn't called Wolfenstein 3-D. By doing so, they change a lot about the game.

I'm happy to own this game myself :) Read full reviewīefore the ESRB, Nintendo would "filter" out anything gruesome in games to make them more suitable for kids. I would only recommend this game to long time Wolf fans seeking a retro experience, or collectors. Simplified graphics and slow performance. NOA had to remove all Nazi symbols and change the dogs to giant rats, which sort of waters down the experience (also remove German speech from enemies).Ĭannot change between weapons of the same time (no going back to pistol once you have a rifle or minigun). The addition of an overhead map, very useful! Some new weapons (flamethrower, rocket launcher). The only reason I like it is because it's reminiscent of the original yet contains enough new content to warrant a new play-through.īoss characters are more frequent, you fight Hanns on level 3.

That being said, the SNES version of this game is not as good as the original PC version. It was the first 3D computer game I had ever played and I spent countless hours patrolling its hallways and killing Nazis.
